As a leader, you’re trying to motivate people to help you get to a point where you could never get alone. There is only one way to really get someone to help you: they have to want it themselves.

Here is where it gets difficult: if you want to build a more effective team, being aware of the needs of your team is one of the best things you can focus on.

I’ll be honest: in the last couple of months I have been focussing too much on the things I wanted to accomplish. I could have been more sensitive towards the needs of my team. I need to become less occupied with what I want and replace that with more interest in what they actually need.

A great way to start with this is to actually sit down and map out the people around you. Do you know what they need? What their biggest struggles are? Do you have concrete plans on how you’re going to help them move to the next stage?
